Update: Nosebleed at the Office

Posted by Bryan Karl | Saturday, May 30, 2009

For this post, nosebleed does not mean the literal epistaxis but just a term connoted to mean one who is receiving an information overload thus causing a figurative nosebleed. Filipinos invented that, I’m not the one to be solely blamed, HAHA.

I am currently undergoing my internship in one software company and will be until October. I admit life at school and life at the workplace are not the same. In school there is pressure. At work, there’s more pressure. In school we focus on a certain language for the time being. Once we had so much of C, and then shifted to Java then to PHP and MySQL. At work, I get a pinch of everything everyday. Once I got slapped by Javascript (too much of it I am learning now) which was never taught to us at school (because we are CS, not IT). I got a touch of Adobe ColdFusion, some okay CSS and HTML and just recently, XML. I know how XML goes but I haven’t tried doing anything about it and mating it with Javascript. Oh man, a day of nosebleeds. And that day was yesterday.

I felt bad going home without finishing my XML coding. Though I finished the crucial part, I haven’t made the last bit of the task because I was already inching to go home and paste myself in front of my laptop. I even went out past my end time but I really had no more energy to finish the task. Sigh, if only I have more experience with such languages. That brings me to the topic of virtual classroom training. What if I go and learn stuff online? On second thoughts, maybe I’ll just read a good book in the office mini-library. Why not?

Sigh, I'm Getting Weak-Kneed

Posted by Bryan Karl | Friday, May 29, 2009

And no this is not because I am crazily madly deeply in love with somebody but because I have less and less exercise as time is moving. Recently, I noticed myself having week knees especially after sitting a long time in the jeepney and then suddenly getting down to walk. It is embarrassing especially if I am showing signs of tripping. Because of my active blogging life, my offline active life is being compromised. Exercise hasn't been on my top priorities nowadays. I go to the office and sit all day, go home and sit again in front of the computer. Such an idle life, and my health is at risk.

Should I blame the internet for this? Partly. I am deeply attached to the internet that I even go beyond my physical limits. I missed being a kid. I did not grow up on PSPs, Xboxs and computer games. I grew in an active way. I go far places when I was a kid, run all I can, being chased by a dog. I play Pinoy games everyday of my happy tike life. When I was older, I ride my mountain bike (since we live in a hilly area) everyday going back and forth the high parts many times. It is because I enjoy biking so much. That is my once active life.

And now I am living the most sedentary life ever. I am so skinny because I don't exercise. I don't have time really. Or maybe I deny that I have some time. Or I'm too lazy. But I'm entering my last year probably in college. After I graduate, I would probably give some time for my health and fitness. I really miss riding a good bike. I hope I could buy one soon and enjoy our neighborhood just like the good old days.

All About Your Hair From Dneero

Posted by Bryan Karl | Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Dneero is here again to take on a survey about hair and hairstyle. Apparently, I personally don't care about hairstyle because my hair is "hard-headed". It takes on its own style. Though every year I change hairstyles, maybe the current simple one would stay longer.

Join this survey from Dneero now!

An Overview of Grants

Posted by Bryan Karl | Tuesday, May 26, 2009

But wait, do you know what a grant is? According to Wikipedia, a grant, which is a form of money, is a fund dispersed by one party, often a Government Department, Corporation, Foundation or Trust, to a recipient, often (but not always) a nonprofit entity, educational institution or business. Grants will always be there. But the problem is that most of the American citizens don't know what a grant is or when they do know, they don't know how to acquire it.

In the USA, there is a special agency called USA Grant Applications that makes the acquiring of grants speedy and easier. This agency is a big help in orienting the common citizens and local organizations on how they can claim their grant. To get one's grant is not an easy task. One of the most crucial parts is the grant writing. For your grant to be heard, you must have an edge, a special uniqueness from the rest that would make you the chosen recipient of the grant. The website of USA Grant Applications shares several tips and ideas regarding the acquiring of grant and grant writing. If you would like, visit their site at www.usagrantapplications.com.

After this overview, you would know more about grants in their website. Need help? There will always be grants for you.

My Opinion on Body Size Discrimination

Posted by Bryan Karl | Monday, May 25, 2009

Body size discrimination has been a problem by some people. Because of our current mindset of what's fad and what's to be mocked in society is not that pleasant to a few of our folks. We always have our shiny eyes pointed on bodies with shape, with curve, with abs, with muscles, with smoothness and without flab. So who are left behind? It is not the skinny people like me. Much more not the models. It is those who are big in body size that get left out, self-esteem degraded and moreover discriminated.

I have a few "big" friends. I don't choose my peers on body size because I myself have an imperfect body -- skinny. Although I admit I joke about body size sometimes, nothing is seriously said to offend anyone. But I get sad knowing about mature people (kids are exempted in body size teasing) who dislike big people to the point of making fun of them in public, leaving them out of place or simply by verbally insulting them. It is just unfair. They may not know that next year they would grow big (or bigger) and would hate themselves. Karma moves in mysterious ways.

I believe big people have the right to live normal lives because they are completely normal. What is seen on TV is just a perception and can be changed. The only problem is that we are all ready to accept and consume what is relayed to us by the media. Somebody I hope, people may realize that there is a chance for this world to become fair. Let us not discriminate, not only in body size but in all aspects.

So for the big and proud ladies out there, flaunt you plus size women’s clothing in hip places. For the big gentlemen, go for your dream girl. Not satisfied? Watch Just Friends.

Memorial Day

Posted by Bryan Karl | Sunday, May 24, 2009

In the USA, Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May. It commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. Patriotism, bravery, nationalism and devotion are what describes the people to be honored on this day. Here in the Philippines, this day is called Araw ng Kagitingan and is not celebrated on the same day as Memorial Day though (April 9).

Join The Newest Social Network, Acobay!

Posted by Bryan Karl | Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about the great power of social networking from personal to business models alike. Each social network has its own characteristic that makes it unique from others. Following the long line of successful social networks is the beta site Acobay. Acobay is a unique social network because it aims to connect everybody through their specific likes and preferences. Though that is likely the aim of each social network, Acobay is different because it categorizes a member's favorites like cars, gadgets, cellphone, softwares, sports, accessories and many more. Say if I like the gadget iPhone, I won't have a problem of interacting with iPhone users because all I have to do is look them up under the gadgets category. This is what you call the easy way of connecting with other people.

It won't hurt for a little reminder. What benefits do we get from social networking again? First and foremost, the networking itself, the connection with others. Building relationships is like building a foundation for a better you. You will have more friends, more people to run to when you need something online. And being in a group online will ensure that you and your blogs or sites will not go unvisited for any span of time. That is how older sites like MyBlogLog and Blog Catalog have helped new bloggers connect with the pro ones. Acobay will be in their line someday.

So if you are a pet lover like me (who owns a Belgian Malinois), check out the Acobay pet network or if you are a book lover like me again, you might want to interact with co-bookworms in the Acobay book network. Acobay is new but it has potentials of becoming a big social network someday. The biggest factor is the membership base and individualities. Let us help make Acobay the number one social network of 2009!

School Is Hard, Harder Without A Locker

Posted by Bryan Karl | Sunday, May 17, 2009

For me, school is an hour away from home. That means I have to commute all the way only through our local jeepneys and I ride three times going to school. Bringing a lot of stuff has always been a hassle for me. Commuting is not easy when you are full-packed with school stuffs and your bag is bulky. Chances are you stumble, you hit a co-passenger or your things would run away from you. So what's our foreseen solution? A locker at school.

A locker! But in my three years in college I never experienced the use of a locker. We have been requesting silently for lockers since our first year in UP but nobody heard our whispers. So what do we do? Carry our books (imagine TC7 last year) all the time even during lunch time. That is so annoying and burdensome.

Imagine our school giving us school lockers (I would pay for it). That means I could leave unnecessary things there or those not needed at home yet. In high school, we had lockers and that was very convenient. In college, only the Fine Arts students were given lockers. Nay for the rest of the courses. I don't care if we are only provided with wood lockers (am I serious when I said that?) as long as we have a personal space at school to leave our heavy stuff behind.

Okay, all I could do now is just rant about this since I know I will still have no locker for my last year in college. Anyways, it is great wishing for a locker and not actually given one. A childish wish really, but all I want is convenience! I hope our Dean is reading this one. :P

My Blog On The Move!

Posted by Bryan Karl | Thursday, May 14, 2009

Note: This serves as a pre-announcement.

Yes, after all those years thinking if I would someday have my own web hosting for my blog, now I have it. I will not drop any company name as of the moment as I am still in the process of propagating the new domain. But unfortunately, this blog that you are now at will not be the one to be given its own web hosting. My other blog What About Bryan will be the one to be moved to a self-hosted Wordpress platform. Yes, I am going Wordpress from Blogger. This will definitely be exciting. Probably by the end of the week, I will have my Blogger blog migrated to Wordpress already. Wish me luck.

Learn Technology By Yourself, Easy!

Posted by Bryan Karl | Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Have you tried learning something new at home? Something modern, technological, gadget-driven and all sorts? Have you ever wondered how it would be like to learn these technological stuff ten years ago? Of course, these gizmos are not yet created ten years ago, so what would we learn by then? Therefore, the human race always adjusts to their creations. We created technology, we changed because of it.

Because of our being a modern era, more and more jobs requiring technical computer or technology skills are getting more in-demand than the classical clerical ones. We are entering an age where everything would be all about the World Wide Web. Jobs near that would be blazing hot.

But what if you don’t have programming or computer skills? Don’t despair as self-studying of such courses is now possible. Studying at home is sometimes better than at school especially if you are a busy bee. Get yourself a big shiny book and drown yourself in the information. Or get an online course if you have the money to spare. It is worth an investment! Or purchase a training CD or DVD (like the Windows 2008 Training DVD) which would be more fun than a textbook.

Actually anything is possible now. All it takes is a little bit of one’s effort to learn something new. Don’t be afraid to try on the latest. Nothing to lose, a lot to gain.

It Isn't Easy Not To See Clearly

Posted by Bryan Karl | Thursday, May 07, 2009

It is true. I have been suffering for many years now because of my non-20-20 vision. As a student it is so hard to listen to class and copy the notes from the blackboard without getting a mild headache from over squinting the eyes just to see the writings clearly. So who and what suffers? My eyes, for forcing it so much. My studies, for not being able to concentrate on the lessons and instead to concentrate on squinting. And I guess my over-usage of the computer also is a factor why my eyes are getting poorly-visional each day.

I kept on urging my mom to buy me eyeglasses already. But since she is busy I’ll have to wait. I don’t think my eye problem came from my over reading of books. Can it be hereditary? My father has also defective eyes. Tomorrow I will be attending a summit in Diliman and then again, I’d have to hurry up and grab the front row seats so I could see any textual presentations. Sigh.

So if you have a near-sighted or far-sighted friend, understand. It isn’t easy not to see clearly. It is very hard. There are so many societal and psychological effects together with the eye strain. I wish I could have my eyeglasses soon. Life would probably be better.

Get your eyes' perfect match from a wide selection of eyeglasses now!

Home Business Success Academy

Posted by Bryan Karl | Wednesday, May 06, 2009

Earning money while at home has already been an “in” thing to do for all those who are in dire need of cash. Ever since online marketing and blogging have made a speedy upward demand amongst everyone, many have studied more possibilities in this area. Because of the current focus on being work-at-home while earning loads of money, a lot have also opened learning institutions, online or not, to help ordinary people gain big in this career.

Home Business Success Academy or HBSA is a high-class virtual academy for training and turning aspiring networkers and entrepreneurs into leaders and achieving marketers. If you have the businessperson inside of you, let go of it and train it in a prestigious institution. Home Business Success Academy by Martin Lightbowne offers three packages for aspiring millionaires. Their packages include the Intermediate Training Package which focuses on personal success, Advanced Training Package which entails building a successful team, and the Ultimate Training Package, the top-tier training pack which basically includes everything. HBSA is a good stepping stone, where the roots of success may reside.

Earning money while at home is really possible. But like anything else, a thing that is too good to be true should be doubted. When purchasing packages and services, it would be good to look for authenticity first. Just remember, business may be cool, but it is also a dangerous game.

Windows Server 2008 And Deployment

Posted by Bryan Karl | Monday, May 04, 2009

The deployment of a mechanical device, electrical system, computer program, etc., is its assembly or transformation from a packaged form to an operational working state. Windows Server 2008, the current release of Microsoft Windows' server line of operating systems, like any other system, also entails deployment. Deploying Windows Server 2008 is learn-able. That is, it may be very technical but when endowed with the proper training, would be an easy task.

When enrolling in a Windows Server 2008 course e.g. Windows 2008 online training, it is best not to leave out the topic of deployment. Configuring and setting up of the server may be an important part but deployment is also equally the same, not just optional knowledge. If you are in for some networking and software-hardware adventure, it would be best to enhance your knowledge in Windows Server 2008 because it is one of the most used servers in big international companies and small local ones alike.

Learning deployment of the Windows Server 2008 can be done in three ways. First is through actual training, a hands-on one wherein another person teaches you the basics and the crucial parts. Second is through an online training course which is what is hot nowadays. Lastly is through self-learning in CD/DVD. Since deployment is a technical course, it is up to you to choose on how to learn it.

Programming Work Blues

Posted by Bryan Karl | Friday, May 01, 2009

I am currently undergoing my internship in one of the software and knowledge process outsourcing companies here in Cebu as a requirement for school. Recently, a good friend offered me a job opportunity, a flexible one, which could make me earn while I learn new stuff. It is a work at home job, a programming one. Actually, this is already a very good opportunity. But I really feel it is the right opportunity at the wrong time.

I know the right thing to do is to grab it, do things the right way. But I have only a month left before school starts and when the first semester starts then I have to give a 100% focus on my studies because of my scholarly aspirations. First semester of the last year in my course is one of the hardest because of the stunning Software Engineering subject. That is why I think one month is inadequate and too short for me to get the job. And I wanted to rest to prepare myself for the coming back of school. I know the opportunity is good and could be wasted. A good early training could be missed out too unless I take online courses like an online a+ course or a Drupal course. But I really feel this is not the right time. And maybe I’ll pass on the opportunity as of the moment. I really need some breathing to do.
